An accident on holiday is often the reason behind a holiday compensation claim and many result from poor and unsafe conditions in and around a hotel swimming pool.
Swimming pool safety should always be a matter of great concern for holiday makers, and it is not just slips, trips and falls that are the cause of personal injury, as the chemicals used to keep swimming pool water clean are extremely hazardous.
In October 2009, a family received compensation after an agonising ordeal suffered at their hotel in Corfu.
The mother, her partner and her two children swam in the pool on their 2007 family holiday, however, they then developed such painful skin conditions that they were unable to put their clothes on. The mother and her children developed severe rashes on their legs, arms, backs and genitals after only one visit to the pool.
She said, "For two nights my children were crying in agony and could barely walk, they were so badly burnt.
"To this day we have not received satisfactory answers or explanations. Our family holiday was completely ruined."
The mother says that she approached the manager of the hotel, but was told the pool was safe to use as long as bathers showered before and after they went into the water. A hotel doctor is reported to have initially advised the family to stay out of the water for a few days, but eventually admitted that high levels of chemicals used in the pool had caused the burns to their skin.
In all, 33 holidaymakers suffered skin burns and 42 Britons made successful compensation claims against tour operators after staying at the hotel in July 2007.
