For the UK holidaymaker an accident on a skiing holiday is a commonplace occurrence.
This reality has been underlined time and again by numerous studies, all of which detail just how important it is that skiers try to stay safe and, fundamentally, that tour operators and ski resorts take every possible precaution to protect the safety of skiers, snowboarders and all those who find themselves on-piste.
One 2010 study by a holiday company showed that, amazingly, more than four in ten UK-based holidaymakers has suffered some form of personal injury caused during holiday time snow sports.
Of these, 6% said they had suffered broken bones or fractures, 31% had suffered cuts and bruises, while, worryingly, 4% reported having suffered a more serious injury.
Release of the figures led one personal injury solicitor, an accident on a skiing holiday specialist, to comment, "A recent high court case emphasised the need for skiers to take responsibility for their own safety. Do not attempt to go down a slope which is beyond your ability even if encouraged by friends or an instructor.
He also offered some advice that could potentially be of benefit in the event of a compensation claim. "If an accident does occur and you feel someone else is to blame, it is important to take a picture of the scene and any equipment involved as well as the contact details of all parties involved and copies of any relevant accident/medical reports. You should then seek legal advice on your return to the UK," he said.
And, although the majority of those who reported suffering injury said that they were relatively minor, a significant proportion (more than one in four) suffered injuries of a severer nature.
The study added to the growing awareness of ski accidents in the UK, which has been helped in recent years by accidents involving a number of high-profile celebrities, including Bill Murray, Tony Danza and the tragic death of Natasha Richardson.
Skiing accident compensation claims
Claiming compensation for a holiday-related skiing accident can sometimes be difficult so, if you can, it is always a good idea to gather as much evidence as possible in order to be able to pursue damages.
However, if it can be established that the negligence of a tour operator, ski resort or private individual led to your skiing accident injury, it may be possible to claim compensation for your pain, suffering, injury, medical expenses and loss of earnings.
Naturally, such cases are easier to pursue if the accident has occurred in the EU; however, in some cases it may also be possible to claim compensation for an accident on a skiing holiday that has occurred outside of the EU.
