Accidents in the workplace resulting from combine harvester accidents

Due to the heavy machinery used on a farm, agricultural accidents in the workplace can be common. Tractors, trailers, lorries and harvesting machinery all are potential hazards that could lead to serious personal injury.

During harvesting, arable farmers are under an increased amount of pressure to ensure that they finish their fields on time so attention to safety may not perhaps be at the forefront of a driver's mind when he's operating a combine harvester.

However, due to their enormous size and weight, combine harvesters are extremely dangerous and the utmost care should be taken around them at all times. Although harvesting large fields can be monotonous, drivers have to remain focused to spot any potential hazards that could infringe on their safety. Large ruts in the field, debris, trees and walkers or animals that have strayed from the footpath or neighbouring fields should all be watched out for.

Power cables also pose a deadly threat to combine harvester operators due to the height of the combine's raised arm that is used during the process. As many fields are criss-crossed with low power lines, farmers have to be aware before they start a field where the cables run and areas where the arm needs to be lowered.

A 21-year-old farm manager who was electrocuted while working in his combine harvester tragically highlights how important such safety checks are.

When the university graduate stopped to clear dirt from the vehicle, he had not realised that the combine harvester had connected with the 11,000-volt overhead power cables and so when he jumped down from the cab, he inadvertently earthed the current.

Although a colleague was quick to the scene after seeing fire coming from the top of the combine, unfortunately the worker could not be saved and he died shortly after the work-related accident.

The inquest found that although the worker received sufficient health and safety briefing on the general risk of poles, wires and trees, it stated there had been "insufficient site-specific information available."

Jury suggestions included equipping farm labourers with a "risk pack" for every site they work at and appointing an on-site supervisor. Suggestions for the arm of the combine to be made from non-conductive material were also made.
