Toyota has released a statement challenging a media news story which claims that emergency staff are at risk when dealing with car accidents involving hybrid electric vehicles that could result in an accident claim.
The news story claims that emergency staff who try to release or cut through car doors during car accidents may receive an electric shock.
Toyota defends electric hybrid cars
Toyota refuted the claim, saying that the opposite is in fact true and that power cables carrying electric currents are automatically shut down in the case of a car accident.
In fact, they were so confident that hybrids were not giving cause to electric shocks and the possibility of accident claims that they pointed out that hybrids have been on roads in the USA for five years and that they were not aware of any personal injury in the USA related to hybrid or EV electrical systems. They did not extend their comments to the UK and Europe.
Toyota vice president of quality and service support Dave Zellers said, "We have worked very closely with experienced safety crews to identify how best to ensure the safety of everybody involved. The fact is that Prius hybrids have been on USA roads for five years and we're not aware of any personal injury in the USA related to hybrid or EV electrical systems."
The car manufacturer stated that the high voltage batteries are contained in a very strong case which is unlikely to be penetrated in the event of a road traffic accident. If an abnormal condition is detected, all high voltage circuits are disabled.
Management computers also constantly assess the electric condition of the vehicle and disconnect high voltage if an airbag is deployed or if there is a sudden deceleration which could lead to a car accident.
High voltage cables and components are heavily insulated, shielded and isolated and the cables are painted bright orange for easy identification. The controller box is sealed and has warning labels.
Furthermore, Toyota says that it published information about emergency response information. All emergency response information is available on the Toyota technical information web site and other professional and motoring industry publications.
As Zellers commented: "As consumers recognise the advantages of hybrid-powered vehicles in terms of fuel mileage, cleaner emissions and a normal driving experience, the public as a whole will become very confident in the safety of these vehicles."
