Life-changing consequences from an accident at work

Suffering an accident at work can be devastating depending on the severity of the personal injuries inflicted, and while for some a workplace accident will mean little more than band-aid and an extra tea-break, some of the most serious incidents will have life-changing consequences.

Fall-from-height accidents at work
Despite forthright campaigning the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) maintain that fall from height accidents are still one of the major causes of severe personal injuries in UK workplaces. All employers, building owners and facilities managers who control and manage the work of others must comply with the Work at Height Regulations 2005 in order to provide a safe working environment for anyone charged with working at height on their premises or at their site.

Exposure to hazardous substances
Many of the most dangerous substances a worker may come into contact with are hidden, such as asbestos which can cause mesothelioma and mould spores which can cause farmer's lung, but factory processes and construction work also often require the use of dangerous chemicals which, if mishandled or misused, can cause severe personal injury.

In industries such as catering, hospitality and hairdressing, workers come into contact with harmful and hazardous substances so regularly that without full training they are likely to suffer work-related injuries such as contact dermatitis or burns.

Employers must adhere to the COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations in order to protect workers who may be required to work with or, be exposed to, any substance which could cause them harm.

Vehicle accidents at work
Although most car and road traffic accidents occur on a non-work-related basis, vehicle accidents in the work-place are still a regular occurrence. Accidents on construction sites, involving heavy earth moving machinery, often have the capability to cause severe personal injury and strict safety regulations for the movement of vehicles and people around a work site should be adhered to in order to avoid such accidents.

In factories and warehouses, the movement of forklift trucks needs to be highly regulated and staff should receive full training before being allowed to drive such vehicles.

Making a claim after an accident at work
Despite stringent safety regulations being in place and regulatory bodies such as the HSE making regular inspections of sites and premises, workplace accidents happen almost every day in the UK.
