Accidents at work, percutaneous injury and HIV

In UK workplaces an accident at work involving a Percutaneous injury (one caused by a needle or other sharp item) is relatively common. However, although infections may result from such an injury, the most serious forms of infection, the viruses HIV, Hepatitis C and Hepatitis B are relatively rare.

Indeed the risk of contracting human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) following exposure to HIV is lowest of all: those exposed to contaminated blood stand a chance of around 3 in 1,000 of becoming HIV positive.

Typically, occupational HIV infection caused by an accident at work is only a hazard for workers in the medical care industries and as such will usually only affect nurses, doctors, dentists, dental nurses and pathologists.

For affected workers, once it has been established that there is a high probability that HIV infection may have taken place, doctors will advise a treatment of Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP).

PEP is an intervention, based on the same three drugs taken by HIV positive people, that works to stop the HIV infection taking hold in a person's bloodstream. Studies show that if taken within 72 hours of exposure PEP can be effective in eliminating HIV from a person's body.

However, because certain strains of the virus are resistant to PEP drugs, it is not a failsafe method for preventing the virus taking hold.

In fact, a small minority of people will find that severe side effects prevent them from continuing PEP treatment.

Furthermore, if more than 72 hours have passed since the potentially infected person experienced exposure to the virus, it is extremely unlikely that a doctor will prescribe PEP as studies show that, past this point, the treatment simply won't work.
