Working on an airport runway where there are aircraft taxiing before take-off and after landing, luggage vehicles and buses travelling to and from stationary passenger jets, and other maintenance vehicles travelling over the tarmac to conduct airplane checks, could result in an accident at work if health and safety procedures are not followed.
Members of staff, who need to cross parts of the runway for whatever reason, should be provided with a high visibility waistcoat or jacket to make them more visible to pilots and drivers of other airport transport.
Without this personal protective clothing they are at a greater risk of suffering personal injury in a collision with a vehicle whose driver may not see them.
Depending on the size of the vehicle, the speed at which it is travelling, and the health of the worker, the injuries they suffer may be relatively minor, very severe, or fatal.
There is even a possibility that during the incident the driver also suffers injury when trying to stop their vehicle suddenly or swerving away from the pedestrian worker.
For this reason is it important that the airport bosses or individual airlines provide high-vis clothing to personnel who work permanently on the runway, or occasionally need to walk onto the tarmac to direct passengers to and from buses or boarding stairs.
Failure to provide safety clothing could mean that the airport, or airlines whose staff will need to cross the tarmac on some occasions, may have a compensation claim made against them for the pain, suffering and loss of earnings caused to a worker.
Furthermore, if the injuries caused are so severe that the casualty sustains permanent damage and cannot return to work, the settlement may need to cover the cost of that person's care for the rest of their lives, plus sustain the family if the victim is the main earner.
Accident at work on airport runway
If you are employed by an airport or an airline, and your role means that you are often or occasionally on the runway, you should be provided with high-vis clothing.
If you were not given high-vis clothing to cross the runway and this resulted in an accident in which you sustained personal injury, YouClaim could help you retrieve damages from your employer.
