Construction site accident at work risk highest in smaller firms

It's official: workers in the construction industry who work for smaller firms are at greater risk of suffering injury in accident at work than those with fifty or more employees.

These findings have been documented in a Centre for Corporate Accountability report entitled Small isn't beautiful: construction worker deaths 2007/2008: employer size and circumstance.

The report, which was commission by UCATT, revealed that 51% of construction deaths in 2007/08 were in companies that employed fewer than 50 workers, with more than half of these fatalities occurring in companies comprised of five or fewer employees.

These revelations have led to accusations that some smaller firms have a flagrant attitude to health and safety.

Alan Ritchie, General Secretary of UCATT, comments, "This report sheds fresh light on the dangers faced daily by workers on construction sites. Small companies often do not take safety seriously, that is how tragedies occur. The HSE must introduce a zero tolerance approach to safety and pressure needs to be applied all year round on small construction companies".

Ritchie believes that tougher punishments are required for the accident at work rate among smaller companies is to be reduced. "As the law stands a company boss is more likely to be sent to prison for not paying their taxes than killing one of his workers. It is an appalling state of affairs and sends a terrible message that we as a society consider life to be cheap," he said.

He also said that it is important not to let statistics obscure the human pain and loss of fatal workplace injury, commenting, "Each and every one of these deaths is an individual tragedy. This report spells out in stark clear terms how each individual died. In order to achieve real improvements in safety it is vital not to hide behind statistics."
