Employer's role in the prevention of a hairdressing accident at work

A hairdressing salon is a place where many people go for pampering and beauty therapy to make them feel extra special for a big day or special event, or even just to boost spirits and give themselves a new lease of life - but, in reality, hair salons can be dangerous places where the risk of personal injury or an accident at work can be great.

Electricity
All sorts of portable electrical equipment is used on site in a hairdresser's and employers have a responsibility to their employees and customers to carry out a number of safety procedures.

Regular electrical checks should be made of the electrical system and all appliances. Any required extra sockets should be fitted by a qualified electrician. All appliances should be suitable for the purpose they are being used for and should be of sufficient build quality to be used in a professional setting for extended periods of time. Any damage to equipment and/or electrical flexes should be investigated and fixed by a qualified person. If in doubt about an appliance's safety, it should be removed from use immediately. Residual current devices (RCDs) should be fitted to prevent electric shocks.

COSHH
Hairdressers and beauticians use many substances that can cause illness and injury and are required to follow the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH).

Hairdressing premises require adequate ventilation and special provision must be made for the storage and use of hazardous substances. Employers must make adequate risk assessments regarding use of chemicals and provide full training and PPE (personal protective equipment) to all staff who will come into contact with hazardous substances or chemical processes, such as perming and hair colouring.

Contact dermatitis is a constant problem in the hairdressing industry and employers have a duty of care to their staff to ensure they are protected from and aware of the risks.

Slips trips and falls
Protecting staff and customers from slips, trips and falls is a serious concern in a hairdressing salon as the hazards are profuse.

Employers and staff must be trained and aware of the risks apparent from trailing electrical cables, wet floors and loose material, such as cut hair, on the floors. As far as possible appliances with trailing cables should be put away as soon as possible, and liquid spills and cut hair should be cleared before staff and customers walk over them. Adequate equipment for the job should be provided and readily available to prevent an accident at work.

Manual handling and RSI
Staff should be provided with ergonomic and adjustable equipment that will minimise the strain on their backs and reduce the risk of repetitive strain injury. Training should also be provided on best practice and manual handling techniques. Staff should be discouraged from lifting heavy items without proper training and/or equipment, and employers should provide equipment such as trolleys for the transportation of heavy items.

The above items are just some of the hazards apparent in a beauty salon. For employer information on health and safety in the workplace contact your local council or go to the Health and Safety Executive website.
