It's official: the public is at an increased level of accident at work risk because of media-led hysterics about so-called "health and safety culture" gone mad.
This realisation arrived in 2010 after the release of findings from an Institute of Occupational Health and Safety survey (Your Job, Your Life), which looked at the attitudes of British people towards workplace health and safety.
Of the 3,000 people surveyed, 69% underestimated the annual work injury rate, with nearly 50% estimating that there were only 50,000 work injuries; the real number is actually nearer 300,000.
And, although the majority of respondents (60%) said that they believed health and safety was important, there was also evidence of a "Jekyll and Hyde" attitude, according to IOSH representatives who addressed members of the House of Lords.
This attitude, they said, is because many believe the "mythical monster created by some sections of the media that tells us it's all about jobsworths making daft decisions and tying us all up in red tape."
Health and Safety Executive Judith Kerr concurs with this view. "In the last two to three years, I have lost count of the number of times I've had to stand up for health and safety and rebut the nonsense that goes on in our name, but I will never give up doing so because I really believe in it," she commented.
Furthermore, the IOSH are worried that it is these negative perceptions of health and safety that could lead to personal injuries caused by individual worker complacency about the risk of an accident at work. A spokesperson commented, "Certainly the media myths store up problems for us all, not just those working in the sector, because they create the danger of people believing some of the nonsense written and talked about health and safety, then turning their backs on the everyday need to protect against the very real risks that do exist in the workplace."
