Accident at work compensation and the dangers of working on a farm

The farming industry is well known for being a hazardous environment to work in. Accident at work compensation claims therefore are often made for workers in this sector who have suffered a personal injury in a work accident.

Both arable and livestock farming have their dangers as both involve operating heavy machinery and working in adverse weather conditions. In January 2010, a tragic tractor accident in Ireland highlighted how dangerous farming can be.

The driver of the tractor, a 37-year-old male farm worker from Dromara, was returning to the farm along the Banbridge Road at around 4am when the treacherous road conditions caused him to lose control of the tractor, leading to it overturning.

Sadly the worker was seriously injured in the accident and died at the scene. There were no other vehicles involved in the accident.

While farmers are perhaps under more pressure than those in other sectors to work regardless of the weather, to ensure crops and livestock are tended to, this must be counterbalanced with the need to protect employee safety.

Although tractors are better equipped to deal with adverse road conditions such as ice and snow, during the heavy snowfall experienced in January 2010, few vehicles could cope with the thick ice and several inches deep snow-covered lanes.

In such conditions, employers need to take some responsibility for their employees' welfare and consider letting workers go home if the weather looks set to cause treacherous driving conditions. Working at 4 in the morning when it is dark and icy is perhaps the most dangerous time to be driving especially on quiet, unlit country roads where there is little traffic to come to your aid in a crash.

If you have had an accident at work that you feel your employers were responsible for, you may be eligible to make a work accident claim.
