Accident at work compensation claim and the general wellbeing of the workplace and workforce

While, in theory, it should be possible to measure the level of a company's compliance with health and safety laws, there are other, less tangible, aspects of a company that help reduce the probability of a work accident occurring. One of these is what can be termed the "general well-being" of the working environment. And although creating a healthy general wellbeing may come at time and cost, it can protect employees and reduce the incidence of accident at work compensation claims.

There can be several levels to a holistically healthy workplace. One of these is the layout of the working environment. For example, cramped and disorganised workspaces not only increase the likelihood of accidents, they also have profound psychological effects.

It is agreed by experts, including psychologists and practitioners of feng shui, that clutter and ergonomically inefficient workspaces contribute to increased levels of stress, disorganisation and feelings of stagnancy. Messy, cramped and cluttered spaces may also effect motivation and, ultimately, the physical health of workers.

Individual workers themselves also contribute to a workplace's general wellbeing. Having physically fit and healthy workers inevitably lifts general morale, reduces the incidence of both occupational and non-occupational sickness, provides a boon to productivity and blunts the blade of a variety of work-related hazards. Perhaps most importantly, it also reduces levels of stress.

The importance of good employee health is recognised by senior Human Resources Professionals, 97% of who believe stress represents the biggest threat to the UK workforce today.

Unfortunately, occupational health professionals, the group best qualified to promote general wellbeing, are in short supply in the UK. Ben Wilmott, employee relations advisor with the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development, comments, "There is a massive lack of occupational health professionals in the UK. There simply aren't enough to go around."

However, it is not all doom and gloom for the UK workforce. The government's Health, Work and Wellbeing Strategy recognises many of the crucial issues and seeks to promote them through a combination of policy and ideological dissemination.

And, though it may not ring true for any person making an accident at work compensation claim, work itself is undeniably good for the health of most people. In 2006 the Department of Work and Pensions conducted a study into health and wellbeing in the workplace and came to the following conclusion, "The comprehensive review of more than 400 pieces of scientific evidence, Is Work Good for your Health and Well-being? concludes that being in work is good for your physical and mental health, boosting self esteem and quality of life."
