Accident at work compensation and the Disease Reduction Programme

During March 2007, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) introduced the Disease Reduction Programme to its website, which already provides a wealth of information about accidents at work and workplace injuries.

The Disease Reduction Programme (DRP) aims to diminish ill health at work with a view to decreasing the number of accident at work compensation claims that are made in the UK each year. It is a well known fact that exposure to substances in the workplace can cause pain and suffering, lead to personal injury, ill health and, in the most extreme circumstances, death.

According to the HSE, the DRP's main goal is, "To reduce ill health that results from failures to properly control hazardous or dangerous substances in the workplace by encouraging healthier working practices, reducing exposure to potentially harmful substances including chemicals and dusts and ultimately reducing the cases of work-related ill health."

A focus of skin disease, respiratory disease and cancer will make up the programme. The DRP will target specific industries synonymous with each of these industrial diseases, in respect of the scale of the problem and attempt to reduce incidence rates by providing information, advice and support.

Skin disease
Work-related contact dermatitis continues to be one of the major occupational skin diseases and there have been a multitude of accident at work compensation claims for dermatitis made over the past few years. Those industries most affected by this itchy skin condition include: hair and beauty, medical and construction. For more information visit www.hse.gov.uk.

Respiratory disease
Respiratory diseases such as asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) are most commonly suffered by those that work with or close to latex, wood dust and solder in the medical, woodworking and welding professions. There are around 1,700 new cases of occupational asthma diagnosed each year. Also, COPD, a lung condition that encompasses asbetsos-related illnesses such as emphysema, is thought to be associated with exposure to harmful substances at work combined with smoking. Cancer
Chemical carcinogens and hazardous dusts have also been linked with cancer that can be developed as a result of exposure at work. In particular, cases of the fatal cancer mesothelioma, which is assciated with asbestos, are predicted to see a dramtic increase between 2011 and 2015.
