Advice to avoid a stockroom accident in retail

Some of the most common work accidents in retail happen in stockrooms. Staff who have not been given the correct training or equipment, and consequently sustain an injury, may claim accident at work compensation.

Whether the shop is a fast paced fashion store or a DIY centre, every stockroom contains hazards which could potentially cause a member of staff a personal injury. It is the manager's duty to ensure the health and safety of employees.

To make use of space, stockrooms are usually arranged so that stock is put onto shelves that often reach up to the ceiling, and clothes may hang from rails equally as high up. Staff should always be given the appropriate equipment to reach stock at this height and should not need to climb up any shelves.

If necessary, employees should have access to a ladder and should also have be given the proper training so that they know how to use it. If possible, another member of staff should remain in the stockroom when an employee is using a ladder to help reduce the risk of fall from height accident.

When stock is delivered, employees should not attempt to lift heavy items as they may sustain an injury. Trolleys or wheeled rails should be used to move heavy delivery so that a member of staff does not need to carry it. If the stockroom is not on ground level, staff should have access to a lift to take delivery items to the appropriate floor instead of using stairs.

Employees should not assume that they can carry a box or crate due to its size. Even in a clothes store, the box may contain heavy contents, such as denim, which could cause a member of staff to sustain an injury if they did not lift it properly.

Staff should be trained to lift items in the correct way so that if stock is a suitable weight to be carried they do not cause themselves unnecessary injury.

Furthermore, stockrooms should always be kept tidy to prevent a slip, trip or fall accidents. Deliveries should be put away as quickly and securely as possible so that they are not left obstructing floor space and do not fall onto staff working below.
