Cleaning and maintenance budgets to prevent work accident compensation claims

A 2009 survey of 1000 UK workers revealed that many employees believed their workplace was unsafe, a fact reflected in the continual incidence of accident at work compensation claims handled by personal injury solicitors nationwide.

The survey was carried out on behalf of Resource GB, a support services company, who established that a probable 40 percent of UK companies had cut their cleaning and maintenance budgets in a bid to save money during the economic downturn of the time.

Most notably, the survey revealed that:

  • 35% believed their working environment to be unsafe;

  • 21% described their colleagues as 'dangerous' (rising to 24% for respondents in the public sector and 48% in the transport sector);

  • 27% said their colleagues did not clear up after themselves; and

  • 18% of respondents said they were distracted by colleagues' clutter.

Further, and pertinent to workers' good health:

  • 28% of office workers said they would describe their workplace as dirty;

  • 58% of employees described their toilet facilities in the workplace as 'adequate at best' and 10% as 'filthy'; and

  • 34% believed their co-workers to have poor personal hygiene (increasing to 43% in the financial sector.

The managing director of Resource GB said, "Managers must make employee wellbeing an absolute priority.

"From the results [of the survey] it is clear that the cuts made to cleaning and maintenance budgets are having an impact on the workforce and could be impacting on the heath of employees.

"Legally, employers have a duty of care to provide employees with a safe workplace, so the fact that so many people consider their workplace unsafe' and their colleagues dangerous' is very worrying.

She added that clean, safe and well maintained business premises would ultimately reduce personal injuries and work accidents; and help maintain morale, drive productivity and decrease the long-term cost of building maintenance."
