Information about the dangers of carbon monoxide

Working environments frequently harbour many dangers and risks, and many employees every year seek accident at work compensation after sustaining a personal injury.

Those who work alongside combustion appliances which burn fossil fuels – such as oil, coal and wood – are at risk of sustaining carbon monoxide poisoning if the appliance is producing the dangerous gas.

Carbon monoxide (CO) can be difficult to detect as it is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas which is usually produced in the workplace as a result of the incomplete burning of carbon-based fuels. Carbon-based fuels are safe to use if employers or managers ensure that they are burned properly, however if they are not burned correctly, poisonous carbon monoxide can threaten workers' health.

When a person breathes in CO, it enters his or her bloodstream where it prevents blood from bringing oxygen to cells, organs and tissues. This can lead to swelling of the brain, nerve damage and unconsciousness. Those with heart and lung problems are particularly vulnerable to carbon monoxide poisoning, as are the elderly.

Health and Safety Executive (HSE) statistics released in 2011 showed that approximately fifteen people die every year as a consequence of poisoning caused by gas appliances and flues which have not been installed properly, correctly maintained or have been poorly ventilated.

Prolonged exposure to carbon monoxide may, in some extreme cases, cause paralysis and brain damage. Serious harm to a person's health is likely to occur if they breathe in CO over a long period of time.

To significantly reduce the risks of CO occurring in the workplace, employers should ensure that combustion appliances are maintained and serviced regularly by a person who has had the appropriate training to do so, as well as making sure that chimneys are frequently swept.
