The dangers of farming and the importance of proper training were jointly highlighted in a 2009 court case following an accident at work claim that saw a man die in 2007.
The 34-year-old man had started working on a Scottish dairy farm just three days before the accident occurred and during the hearing Health and Safety Executive inspectors claimed the work accident was wholly preventable.
The new employee had been required to help another employee herd cattle from one field to another and in doing so, took control of an all-terrain vehicle (ATV).
He had never ridden a quad bike before and did not receive formal training from management at the dairy farm. Further, he had not been supplied with a safety helmet and the vehicle was later found to have a number of contributing defects such as incorrect tyre pressure for the terrain over which the employee would travel.
The owners of the farm were fined in connection with the incident after admitting breaches of the Health and Safety at Work Act and for failing "to provide and maintain plant [the ATV] that was, so far as reasonably practicable, safe".
Preventing accidents at work
HSE Inspector, Gillian McLean said of the accident, "[The worker's] death could easily have been prevented."
She commented that the employee should have received adequate, formal training prior to using an ATV, that ATV drivers should always wear a safety helmet, and that the vehicle should have been regularly checked to maintain its good mechanical condition.
She said, "Sadly, farming is a dangerous business, and the numbers of deaths and injuries to farmers, workers and members of the public is unacceptable. In 2007-08, nine agricultural workers in Scotland lost their life at work and 2,364 were seriously injured."
