Accident at work claims and uneven flooring-related trips and falls
31/10/2011

Most interior work spaces have even flooring, but some older buildings may not and this could result in an accident at work claim.

Two instances in which uneven flooring could cause a trip or fall injury are when a building has old wooden flooring which has bumps, odd gradients, and loose boards, and when linoleum is poorly fitted or not maintained and this has caused portions of it to bulge in some sections or curl away from the edges of the room.

Ideally, old wooden flooring will be replaced, but in listed buildings this is not a possibility and would lead to the building losing some of its charm.

Where replacing old flooring is possible an employer should see to it that the new flooring reduces the risk of personal injures amongst their workers.

Linoleum flooring which is a health and safety risk should be replaced as soon as possible. Rips, bumps and parts which have curled up from the sides of the room could result in a worker losing their footing or tripping over.

Depending on the age, general health of the individual, and what items they might be carrying at the time of the incident, the injuries sustained could be anything from minor to severe.

In buildings where it is impossible to have the flooring replaced, or while employers are waiting to have the flooring changed, workers should be made aware of the hazards in certain rooms.

Furthermore, employers can bring attention to particularly dangerous parts of the floor by using coloured tape or a stand-up warning sign which can be placed right on top of or in front of the problem area.

Where possible, workers should not use the room at all until the flooring is replaced.
