Watching Donald Duck's "How to Have an Accident at Work"

The existence of a 1959 cartoon called "How to Have an Accident at Work" indicates that fears of industrial injury are not as modern a phenomenon as some would have us believe.

The cartoon, which features Donald Duck, is one of several produced by Disney; there is, for example, a sibling cartoon called "How to Have an Accident at Home" too. In this one, however, the home space is made perfectly save by our anatine hero. It is only when he gets to work that "he checks in, but his head checks out," as the narrator says, leading to a sequence of work accidents involving large machines.

The narrator is Fate, who insists that he is not responsible for the industrial injury that befalls Donald; it is Donald's lack of focus on the job, instead, that is blamed for the events. In contemporary personal injury law, of course, it may be argued that a lack of training from his employers that might be responsible for the injuries suffered, but if the lack of attention occurred in spite of appropriate instruction having been offered, a compensation claim might well fail on those grounds.

It is, of course, possible that the cartoon could feature as part of a training programme offered by an employer.

The setting of the cartoon is one of mechanical industry, and does not, therefore, include all of the potential work accident types that are now known to us; the proportions of people involved in office-based jobs, as opposed to factory ones, mean that RSI may be more of a worry for those trying to avoid a modern work accident.
