An accident at work can lead to a serious personal injury that can prevent the victim from carrying out day-to-day tasks such as driving, holding down a job and completing household chores.
When assisting with police training, you would expect the session to be well organised and the risk of personal injury to be minimal. While the training may be intended for a dangerous situation, you would have thought that any dangerous scenarios would be staged and the risk of actual harm to be insignificant.
However, in 2007 a participant assisting with police weapons training was seriously injured when he was shot in the stomach with a live round. The incident occurred at a weapons training session conducted by Thames Valley Police. The policeman responsible for firing the civilian had not realised that the ammunition he was firing was actually live and not a dummy.
The civilian sustained serious injuries to his stomach and suffered damage to his lungs, kidneys and bowel. His personal injuries were so serious that he had to undergo several major operations and was in intensive care for two weeks. The severity of his injuries also meant that his career was over.
Following the incident, the 57-year-old control room employee made a compensation claim for his personal injury and was awarded a total of £100,000 to cover his loss of earnings and suffering he had sustained.
The policeman who shot him was charged with several offences including firing a fire arm during a lecture and failure to check the ammunition. As he retired immediately following the event, the policeman avoided any police discipline but he did have to pay a total of £16,000 in damages in September 2009.
Thames Valley Police were also ordered to pay £40,000 for breaching health and safety rules.
While the compensation amount will undoubtedly help the ex-control room worker to support himself following his forced retirement, it is likely that the incident will continue to affect him for the rest of his life.
