Realising the road-related accident at work risk

For those who thought the accident at work risk while driving for professional drivers was only high in the UK, think again. Research from Ireland has highlighted how the problem is not just confined to Britain's shores.

According to Ireland's Health and Safety Authority (HAS), around 100 workers die in work-related accidents at work each year, with personal injury rates much higher among worker-drivers too, a fact that is perhaps explained by their 40% higher likelihood of being involved in a crash than a private driver.

Martin O'Hallaran, HAS chief executive, comments, "All employers are required by health and safety laws to put proper measures in place to protect the safety of all their employees.

"Particularly concerning is that 42% of Irish businesses have no driving for work policy as part of their health and safety management system.

"A 2008 Health and Safety Authority survey of businesses also found that there was a lack of awareness of their duties to manage work-related driving activities."

In fact, if anything, the urgency to change the situation in Ireland only re-emphasises just how much work remains to be done on the issue in the UK, where up as many as 33% of all traffic collisions involve someone who is using the road for the purposes of work, with between 800 and 1,000 people suffering fatal injury in such accidents each year.

Just as with most other aspects of workplace health and safety, there is much that remains to be done.
