Polycyclic hydrocarbon poisoning and possible sources of exposure

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a broad group of organic compounds that are commonly formed during certain processes of the aluminium, steel and iron industries. They are also produced by motor vehicle emissions, mining, refuse incineration and the oil refinery process. They can also be produced by the burning of wood or coal. Another common, though low level, cause of exposure is cigarette smoke. PAHs are also present in some foodstuffs and can occur as a result of particular cooking techniques, such as barbecuing, frying or charbroiling.

When at room temperature, all PAHs are combustible, colourless solids or crystals and are without odour to the human nose.

PAHs are highly carcinogenic and can result in a variety of cancers. Additionally certain PAHs, such as benzo[a]antracene, chrysene and benzo[a]pyrene are all also known for their mutagenic (capable of causing cellular mutation) and teratogenic (ability to interfere with embryonic development) properties. The carcinogenic effects of PAHs have been certified by The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).

Worldwide, cases of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon poisoning are significant and can, as well as presenting a carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic threat, result in exposed workers developing a wide variety of more immediate symptoms, including coughing, nausea, poor concentration, poor coordination and breathing problems.

There are regulations in place to prevent workers from suffering excessive exposure to PAHs in the workplace. The most powerful of these is The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1988.(CoSHH)

As such, all employers have a duty to provide workers with protection against PAH exposure, whether through the use of protective work wear, specialist equipment, training or risk assessments.
