Car accident compensation advice
If you have been involved in a car accident, try to follow these basic steps
If you are involved in a car accident in which someone (other than you) has been injured, or where damage has been caused to someone else's property, then you must stop. Give your name, address, registration number and insurance details, to all the other people who are involved in the accident (and the name and address of the owner of your vehicle if this is not you). If you are unable to stop, you must give these details to the police within 24 hours.
- No matter what the circumstances of the accident, do not make any comments about who you believe was responsible for the accident
- Write down the names and addresses of the other drivers involved
- Write down the make, model, colour and registration number of the other vehicles involved in the accident
- Write down the damage that has been caused to the other vehicles involved
- Write down the name, address and phone number of any witnesses who saw what happened
- Draw a rough sketch of the accident scene, showing road junctions, traffic lights and the positions of all vehicles involved following the accident
- As soon as possible write down what happened
- Notify your insurance company as soon as possible
