Cutting the number of work-related accidents on UK roads

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA) has seen a huge growth in interest in work-related road safety issues over the last year.

ROSPA initially raised the issue of how to manage occupational risk better and revealed that between 800 and 1000 people are killed in work-related accidents on UK roads every year. This led to a surge in questions about the subject.

Reducing work-related road traffic accidents
Reducing accidents remains a crucial health and safety activity in the UK and the government has clearly indicated that it intends to pursue a policy of reducing work-related road accidents, setting tough targets for companies to reach. As a result, local authorities will be looking at work related road incidents more carefully in future.

This strategy falls on the back of research confirming that individuals driving on company business are more likely than other road users to be involved in a work-related accident resulting in death or serious injury.

Employees driving for work or company business are involved in a work activity and for the time that they are in the vehicle, it is regarded to be their place of work. The Fleet Driver Risk Index identifies which drivers are at high risk in different professions and identifies particular behaviour which could cause or increase that risk, so that preventative health and safety measures can be taken. Leading UK driver training group Peak Performance Management provides training courses addressing these issues. Read more at www.peakperformance.net

Charles Davis, ROSPA Head of Driver and Fleet Solutions said: "We are delighted and encouraged by the way businesses and organisations have responded to the challenge of managing occupational road risk".

ROSPA works to promote safety in all areas of life - at work, in the home, on roads, in schools. Read more about ROSPA at www.rospa.org
