Practitioners of martial arts have a strong risk of a whiplash personal injury
Practitioners of martial arts have a risk of a whiplash personal injury which could result in a whiplash claim similar to those who suffer whiplash in car accidents.
There are, however, no safety regulations to address these concerns - similar to health regulations surrounding other sports players like ice hockey players. Ice hockey players also constantly risk a whiplash injury which could require a whiplash claim.
Kinematic and biomechanical analyses of common martial arts spaces show that there are four common manoeuvres that have kinematics (motion forces) which could result in a cervical personal injury and a whiplash claim.
Four particular movements accelerate the risk of a whiplash personal injury. They include O goshi (judo) - in which the fighter uses his shoulder to swing the opponent over his hips; the suplex (jujitsu) in which the fighter grabs the opponent around the waist and lifts him up over his shoulder to fall forwards onto his face; the souplese - where the opponent is rotated and slammed down onto his back and the guillotine drop (a choke hold).
In a video analysis of these four manoeuvres, performed a total of ten times, it was shown that the moves had kinematics (motion forces) that could result in serious cervical personal injury and whiplash claim, particularly the motion of O goshi and souplesse.
Other forms of self-defence like boxing involve straight open-handed hits which combine rotation and whiplash energy from the shoulder, elbow and wrist which can pack a painful knock-out punch: a well-known practice not only in Asian but also European fighting arts. The move itself can cause whiplash, and shatter the jaw.
Whiplash compensation claims
A whiplash personal injury claim can be extremely serious and require medical treatment. Although most whiplash personal injuries are sustained in car accidents and other general road traffic accidents, they can also happen during sporting events.
Subtle but potentially lethal sports like martial arts can be as damaging as fast-moving sports and the force of a quick martial arts move can be equivalent to a rear-end car accident.
