Whiplash injuries are caused by a sudden jerking motion to the head which causes the soft tissue surrounding the neck to be stretched or strained. Whiplash is commonly sustained as a result of car crashes and around 20% of those involved in vehicle accidents will sustain a whiplash injury. Headaches and neck pain are usually associated with whiplash.
In the past diagnosing whiplash injuries has been fairly complex seeing as the injuries are usually to the soft tissue which can not be picked up in an X-ray. Specialised scans such as CAT scans, MRI scans and ultra sounds are now often used to determine whether a whiplash injury has been sustained.
Cervical collars used to be recommended to prevent the neck from moving and straining any further. However, medical reports have shown that this strategy does not help strained muscles; in fact, muscle tension is worsened by immobilisation.
Contemporary treatments include applying a cold compress or ice to the injured area for the first 24 hours following a whiplash injury to reduce the likelihood of swelling and subsequent neck and shoulder pain. Anti-inflammatory pain killers may be prescribed. Gentle exercises or massage techniques may also be recommended by your doctor
