What causes whiplash injury pain?

Common instances where whiplash injuries occur are road accidents, horse riding accidents, sailing accidents, and while playing contact sports such as rugby or American football.

At the time of a road accident or sporting accident the head is jolted and the neck muscles contract to protect you from personal injury. This is a stretch reflex where the muscles automatically tighten to prevent excessive motion that could fracture the neck or cause a spinal cord injury. The neck pain and weakness to the neck that follow is often caused by muscle spasms.

Muscle tension and fatigue as a result of whiplash injury can cause your spine to be misaligned leaving you feeling unbalanced and sometimes dizzy. This muscle tension can also pull the neck vertebrae closer together, making your neck stiff. Pressure on the discs can lead to disc degeneration and even pinched nerves with pain and numbness spreading down the arms and hands.

These symptoms can cause great discomfort to whiplash injury sufferers and prevent them from doing day to day tasks. This often leads to personal injury compensation claims.
