Whiplash and other common injuries sustained from car accidents

If you are unfortunate enough to be involved in a car accident then you may suffer a variety of personal injuries. Whiplash is not classed as a serious personal injury and is usually caused by the impact of a car crash, particularly rear end and side on collisions. Some injuries are more severe than others and can even be fatal. Sadly, some people involved in car crashes are found dead at the scene when the emergency services arrive.

Minor injuries

  • Whiplash injury - occurs when the neck is jerked suddenly and the muscles are strained. The muscles have a stretch reflex to protect the neck and spine to prevent us from sustaining more serious injuries. Once the neck muscles tense they tend to stay strained for several weeks but the headaches, neck pain and stiffness usually subsides within a few months.
  • Knee injuries - during car accident passengers in the front seat can have their knees thrown up and forward, hitting the dash board. This can cause minor damage to the knees such as cuts and bruising. In some instances surgery may be needed to restructure the knee cap but long term damage is unusual.

Major injuries

  • Spinal cord injury - damage to the spinal cord can be caused by the impact of a car crash that crushes the spine or the cord. The spinal cord can be bruised, compressed or torn and in more serious cases the vertebrae can be broken. Severe spinal damage could result in paralysis.
  • Head injury - a closed head injury could occur if the head bangs against the windscreen with force, causing the brain to bang against the skull inside. This can result in concussion, brain damage and in extreme cases death. Penetrative head injuries are also possible where pieces of glass or debris could become lodged in the skull or break through and damage the tissue inside.
