In vehicle collisions, if a person's head moves vigorously forwards, backwards or sideways, he or she may suffer a whiplash neck injury.
During whiplash, ligaments and tendons in the neck are stretched; causing pain, stiffness or a loss of movement around the affected area.
Whiplash can occur as a result of traffic accidents, usually when one road user collides with another. However, in 2012, vehicle safety experts at Thatcham Research believed Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) systems would help to reduce car accidents – and consequently, the number of whiplash claims.
According to Thatcham, more than 6,000 pedestrians are killed or suffer serious personal injury on the roads every year.
Most traffic accidents occur when a vehicle is moving below 20mph – and may have been prevented if the liable party had managed to stop in time.
A driver may fail to brake for a variety of reasons, such as distraction or poor visibility. However, some car manufacturers have developed AEB technology to help motorists avoid a crash.
AEB systems aim to stop a car before a collision takes place – minimising personal injury to pedestrians, drivers and other road users.
When fitted to a car, an AEB system uses low-cost laser radar (LIDAR) sensors to monitor potential hazards in front of a vehicle.
If the technology detects an obstacle within six metres, it will usually warn the driver. If he or she does not take appropriate action, the system will apply half of the vehicle's braking power.
If a car is moving at 10mph, an AEB device should prevent a traffic accident from occurring. At 20mph, the technology may reduce the effects of a crash by around 50%.
Although in 2012 some vehicle manufacturers, such as Volvo and Ford, already fitted similar systems onto their cars, Thatcham claimed AEB technology could prevent 2,700 pedestrian casualties and 160,000 whiplash claims annually.
Although AEB systems may help to reduce the effects of a car accident, they do not completely prevent vehicle collisions.
If you have experienced harm in a traffic accident, you may be entitled to claim compensation providing the incident was not your fault.
Any funds awarded can go towards vehicle maintenance, covering medical treatment costs or recouping lost income.
