What is spinal cord injury?

The spinal cord is a collection of nerve fibres that allow the brain to communicate with the rest of the body. Spinal cord injury is usually the result of an accident where the spinal cord can become bruised, compressed or torn and in some cases the vertebrae is broken. Trauma to the spinal cord is usually caused by an impact that crushes the spine and the cord.

Circumstances common for spinal cord injury to occur include: horse riding accidents, scaffolding accidents, gunshot wounds and driving accidents. 55% of spinal cord injury cases are a result of road traffic accidents and 18% are a result of falls. The remaining 27% of spinal injuries are a result of sports injuries or other medical conditions.

The most severe cases of spinal cord injury cause paralysis, loss of sensation in the area surrounding the trauma, loss of bladder and bowel control. Pain, sensitivity and muscle spasms may develop over time. It is also common for bed sores, bladder infections and lung infections to develop in addition to the spinal cord injury.

The amount of damage to the spinal cord determines the extent of disability as a result of spinal cord injury. It is rare that all of the spinal nerves are severed and new research is showing that spinal cord repair and regeneration are possible. It is essential for rehabilitation therapy to start soon after the injury occurs to improve the patient’s condition. There are a number of hospitals and rehabilitation centres around the UK that specialise in medical care following spinal cord injuries, head injuries, strokes and amputations.
