Workers miss out on billions in compensation
Workers across the UK are potentially missing out on billions in compensation because they don't file complaints or attempt to pursue claims, despite the fact that Vibration White Finger (VWF) sufferers have a high rate of success in achieving compensation.
TUC studies
TUC reports that less than one in ten people injured involved in industrial accidents in the UK are awarded compensation by their employer. Hazards magazine states that 850,000 people suffer an accident every year in the UK, but no more than 80,000 receive compensation.
Worse still, costs incurred by injured people and their families often accumulate to more than the compensation figures they receive. Those suffering with industrial deafness, breathing problems and Vibration White Finger are most likely to receive compensation, however, and such cases make up three quarters of all common law settlements.
TUC general secretary, Brendan Barber, comments, "Some employers and commentators would have us believe that the UK is caught up in a compensation culture frenzy. The reality is very different for hundreds of thousands of workers made ill or injured by their jobs each year. The way to end the UK's disposable worker culture is not to make higher or more compensation payouts, but it's for more employers to take their health and safety responsibilities more seriously."
Hazards compensation studies
The magazine Hazards has a guide to compensation allowances in the UK, outlining what is available and includes online analyses, information about benefit schemes and compensation sources, and access to a compensation database.
The database includes the case of Barry Wallis, 47, who was awarded £7,500 compensation from Instituform Technologies Ltd for Vibration White Finger. He had not been warned of the health risks of using vibrating hand tools nor was he provided with protective equipment. Read more at www.hazards.org in the database section.
The website also offers insight into the worrying truth about how different payouts are awarded depending on the situation. For example, a stockbroker with a broken arm could feasibly end up with more compensation than a building worker with a broken neck.
Vibration White Finger personal injury compensation
Although most cases of Vibration White Finger are mild, workers affected by VWF are sometimes so incapacitated by their injury that they never work again.
In the case of a chronic industrial accident at the hands of a negligent employer, workers should use their right to claim.
