Science of smoking for VWF sufferers
Sufferers from vibration white finger (VWF) are often advised not to smoke. This is because the adverse effects of smoking can affect the blood vessels, and as it is constriction of the blood vessels in the fingers that is at the heart of the vibration-related condition, this is thought to have the potential to worsen symptoms.
It is interesting, however, to note that research into the ongoing condition of sufferers from vibration white finger does not always hold up this assumption. Research from Japan in 2004, for example, found no significant difference between the members of the group who were smokers and those who were not when they were surveyed regarding the progression of the disease.
Other studies have found differences, however, such as a 1994 study from the UK, which measured the symptoms of sufferers using cold challenge plethysmography (measuring changes in blood volume in response to lowered temperature). In this report, those who did not smoke, or gave up smoking after a VWF diagnosis, were shown to have less severe symptoms.
While there are probably many complex reasons why scientific reports can disagree, it is possible that the disagreement between these two studies could arise from the fact that the first uses a subjective assessment involving the patient's memory, whereas the second relies on cold numerical fact.
Whatever the reason for this, however, science is generally agreed on the personal injury a smoker can cause to themselves, and this may itself be a good enough reason to avoid smoking.
