Raynaud's disease and the coexistence of erytromelalgia
Raynaud's disease, most commonly arising as an occupational illness in workers who have been exposed to excessive levels of vibration, is characterised by cold, white and painful fingers and extremities.
It is surprising then to learn that erytromelalgia, an acrosyndrome that actually seems to be symptomatically opposite to Raynaud's disease should sometimes coexist with Raynaud's.
For while Raynaud's phenomenon is marked by constriction of blood vessels, leading to acute feelings of coldness in the sufferer's extremities, erytromelalgia is marked by heat, redness, and pain in the extremities.
Worryingly, there is an increasing body of evidence suggesting that erytromelalgia can be induced by treatment of Raynaud's. Although this is a relatively rare occurrence, it suggests that the two conditions share complex a pathogenic relationship.
Researchers have found that the two diseases share certain common links. One example relates to the function of the blood vessels. In Raynaud's, vasoactive substances (serotonin and prostaglandin) work to constrict blood vessels, while in eytromelalgia the same vasoactive substances work to dilate the blood vessels. This helps explain the symptomatically inverse relationship.
Fortunately, some hope has been offered to people suffering from the coexistence of both conditions. Limited clinical trials have shown the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors to be an effective treatment in these cases, although more trials need to be conducted before there is any form of widespread prescription of the treatment.
Workplace injury lawyers who understand the needs of the Raynaud's claimant
As many as ten million people in the UK are thought to suffer from Raynaud's phenomenon, although many of these will have developed the condition with no apparent cause, those who have done so as a result of exposure to vibrating machinery in the workplace may be able to claim compensation.
