Raynaud's disease compensation claims and CREST syndrome

If you have been diagnosed with Raynaud's disease or occupational vibration white finger (VWF), you may well have heard the term CREST syndrome. Also known as limited scleroderma; it presents in patients as slow onset progression of the skin hardening associated with full blown scleroderma.

Typically, CREST syndrome is preceded by Raynaud's disease by several years. VWF is often a direct result of occupational exposure to vibrating machinery, tools or processes; which leads to Raynaud's disease. Patients with Raynaud's disease suffer constriction of the small arteries particularly in the hands and feet, leading to loss of blood flow. They are particularly susceptible to cold temperatures; classically with skin colour change to the fingers, followed by pain as the blood returns to the small arteries.

The acronym CREST stands for the five main features of the syndrome:

CREST is a limited form of scleroderma and usually spares the lungs and kidneys, thereby limiting its ability to threaten life.
