Mining organisations continue to complain about industrial negligence

Miners in the UK are calling out for better industrial accident health and safety prevention measures and a former minister has attacked the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for failing to compensate sick workers and their families.

The mining industry had been campaigning for compensation for over a decade and since 1999 more than 3 billion pounds have been paid to miners for conditions ranging from Vibration White Finger to bronchitis and emphysema.

The figure sounds commendable but there are still fault lines in the compensation payout scheme. Surface workers are excluded from compensation payouts, despite the fact that the DTI has already accepted liability to compensate them.

The legal services ombudsman ruled in April 2006 that sick miners who complained about solicitors taking money from their compensation awards were being "badly let down" by the Law Society. The Law Society then fired back against the ombudsman, accusing them of criticism and saying that 45 solicitors from 10 law firms face disciplinary actions for their handling of miners' claims.
