Miner gets VWF compensation

In January 2006 we received an email from the wife of a man who had worked as a coal miner in Wales until the 1990s and who had just been diagnosed with Vibration White Finger (VWF) by a GP. She told us how he had been suffering with his hands for years but a recent trip to a walk in clinic confirmed that he had developed the industrial disease that restricts the blood vessels.

The woman told us how her 42-year-old husband said he didn't want any fuss but the problem was getting so bad that he was now finding it difficult to work with his hands and increasingly difficult to support his family, so she thought that he may need to claim VWF compensation.

When we called the woman back for more details we asked if we could talk to her husband before assessing the claim further. We spoke to the ex-miner who told us that while he worked as a miner he had used vibrating tools on a daily basis, which left his hands feeling tingly.

There were a few occasions, especially during the colder months, that his fingers would become very stiff and even turn white. At the time he just put this down to using his hands in cold conditions, so stoically got on with the job. However, after he had stopped working the mines and he took up factory work, he realised that there was something amiss.

His fingers continued to get stiff and painful when he was working with machinery that vibrated and his line manager suggested that he should seek medical advice. Many miners had started to work in factories after the closure of many of the collieries in Wales and, having witnessed these symptoms before, he suspected that the worker might be suffering from VWF.

These suspicions were confirmed when the factory worker's wife took him to a walk in clinic at their local surgery. The doctor diagnosed acute Vibration White Finger, which he believed was triggered by work with vibrating tools in the mines and aggravated by work with vibrating machines at the factory.

We referred him to a personal injury solicitor who operates in Wales, close to the claimant's home town, and he helped the ex-miner to get 100% VWF compensation for the pain, suffering and lost earnings that he had suffered.

Workers from the extraction, energy and water supply industries, particularly coal miners, were those most commonly affected by disabilities resulting from illnesses and accidents at work during 2002-2005 and, just as YouClaim has helped many miners who sought VWF compensation in the past, we are sure that we can help you too.
