Vibration white finger a disease of Canadian lumberjacks too

Vibration white finger is often thought of in the UK as an industrial disease related to the mining and machining industries, but it is a condition known around the world. Canada, for example, has a history of VWF symptoms in its lumberjacks and tree fellers.

A study, now 25 years old, looked at the rate of VWF symptoms in this industry, and found that more than half of the 141 tree fellers studied were displaying symptoms of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) and Raynauds disease.

For those people that had been in the industry for more than ten years, the incidence of symptoms rose - 75 percent of the people who had more than twenty years' experience of using chainsaws and other tree-felling equipment in their jobs had these symptoms.

A control group of people chosen to represent the same spread of ages showed an incidence of VWF symptoms in only 2 percent of people. The vast difference here shows a strong link between prolonged chainsaw use and Raynaud's symptoms. The link was measured by the speed of fingers rewarming after cooling.

The subjects studied did not reveal any evidence that smoking cigarettes had played a part in these results. Neither did they reveal any history of compensation claims having been made regarding the industrial disease.
