The IOA HAVS certificate
The Institute of Acoustics (IOA) is the professional body representing those who work with moderate to high levels of acoustics, noise and vibration, including those from Hand Arm Vibration (HAVS) hazardous sectors. It was established in 1974 and is a nominated body of the Engineering Council and is comprised of around 2,800 members from a whole variety of industries.
One important initiative run by the institute something called the Certificate in the Management of Occupational Exposure to Hand Arm Vibration. It is a five-day course, involving four days of study, followed a by an examination on the fifth day.
The course seeks to help employers come to understand the kinds of HAVS hazards associated with their workplaces, to protect employees, appreciate their legal duties and gain a working knowledge of the relevant health and safety law.
It also is committed to enabling employers' ability to both identify hazards and areas of the workplace where vibration reduction is required.
One other, undoubtedly important, component of the course is its focus on assessing daily work patterns and the resultant levels of employee exposure. It also seeks to educate employers on situations where personal protective equipment will be suitable to the needs of workers.
All certificate courses are held at accredited centres, located in Sheffield, Leeds, Sunderland, Rutland and Hampshire, and are held twice yearly.
