Glasgow injury claims and the launch of Go Safe Glasgow

Sometimes the tragedy of events can have more impact than any safety campaign. This was the case when in 2009 City Chambers launched Go Safe Glasgow - a campaign designed to cut fatalities, casualties and Glasgow injury claims - on the same day that that two women were killed in two separate Glasgow traffic accidents within the same hour.

The Chief Inspector of Strathclyde road policing said that Go Safe Glasgow was "yet another way… to raise awareness of the dangers of the roads."

And what could be a more chilling reminder of the need to avoid complacency than the deaths of two women, one in her 20s, the other in her 60s, in separate incidents in different parts of the city.

One of the councillors attending the launch of the campaign said that the events were "tragic and our thoughts are with those hurt and the loved ones of the two women killed."

She also said that such accidents should remind us all of the work that still needs to be done. "By most measures, Glasgow's roads are safer today than they have ever been in modern times - but these incidents demonstrate exactly why there can be no room for complacency," commented the councillor.

Adding, "Go Safe Glasgow is a campaign for all road users - drivers, cyclists, those who drive at work and of course, our most vulnerable citizens, such as our children and older people.

"We must be committed to our local and national objectives and be innovative and forward thinking on how we achieve them."

Go Safe Glasgow is just one of many campaigns and organisations that seek to reduce the numbers of accidents and road-related Glasgow injury claims, others include the police and Glasgow City Council's dedicated Road Safety Unit.
