An accident in Scotland and the potential for tragedy

With colder temperatures and snow more prevalent in Scotland than in other parts of Britain, the rate of accidents in Scotland can double if cold weather hits. With roads, railways and runways all affected by the poor conditions, the country can soon grind to a halt if the bad weather stays.

The snow storms of December 2009 and January 2010 saw a huge rise in Scottish accidents ranging from hikers killed by avalanches surrounding Ben Nevis, to motorists killed in car accidents and hundreds housebound until the warmer weather arrived.

Perhaps the most concerning accident was the jetliner which skidded off of the runway at Prestwick Airport near Glasgow in western Scotland. Although no one was injured when the Boeing 737 skidded on the icy runway, the incident had the potential to be much more serious. Not only could passengers on board have suffered serious personal injury, but airport staff could have been harmed as well.

Although many British airports closed during the worst of the cold spell, passengers questioned why Prestwick airport remained open during such treacherous weather conditions.

One passenger speaking to the BBC at the time commented, "You can hardly walk on the runway never mind stop a plane," he added. "How anyone expects to stop a plane on that I'll never know."

Had any of the passengers been injured in the accident, the budget airline operating the jet could have found themselves facing passenger injury claims for personal injury compensation.
