Skin whitening creams, typically used by black and Asian people who want to lighten the pigmentation of their skin, are sold in abundance, both online and in UK chemists. However, some creams, particularly those that contain hydroquinone, are banned because they are dangerous and may cause severe side-effects. Anyone who has bought a skin whitening cream containing hydroquinone in the UK and suffered side-effects may wish to consider contacting personal injury solicitors with a view to claiming compensation.
Hydroquinone
Hydroquinone (C6H602) is a dangerous and toxic chemical primarily used for manufacturing rubber or as part of the photographic dark room process.
It has been banned by the Department of Trade and Industry as part of the 24th Commission Directive. Trading Standards regularly try to police this ban, however, creams containing the chemical are still available from some UK chemists and have been known to cause a number of side-effects, including dark and blotchy patches, premature aging, cracked skin and acne-like spots.
A consultant dermatologist from Kettering General Hospital explains, "Using hydroquinone as a cosmetic has potential dangers.
"The main one being that the strength can be very variable and the use of strong hydroquinone for long periods can be associated with worse pigmentation.
"You can actually end up with darker skin rather than lighter skin."
Other culprits
But hydroquinone is not the only skin-whitening substance sold illegally in some UK chemists that has the potential to cause the kind of adverse reaction which might prompt affected consumers to seek the representation of personal injury solicitors. Mercury-based products are also a problem and can strip the skin of natural pigmentation, cause blue patches and even precipitate organ failure.
And there is a relatively new illegal product on the market: kajoic acid, which can inhibit melanin production and may even cause skin cancer.
