Personal injury claim and the dangers of cheap jewellery

Millions of men, women and children wear jewellery on a daily basis without a second thought. Whether expensive or not, concerns over personal injury claims are unlikely to be running through your head as you put on a necklace in the morning. However, some jewellery has the potential to be harmful due to the lead content it may contain.

Lead poisoning can lead to serious health problems including anaemia, digestive problems, nerve disorders, memory and concentration problems and in extreme cases, death. Children can be more susceptible to lead-related personal injuries from jewellery due to their weaker and developing brains and bodies. Children are also more prone to putting jewellery in their mouths making exposure to lead poisoning much more dangerous.

In 2006, a child died from acute lead poisoning after they ingested a heart-shaped metallic charm containing lead. The charm had been attached to a metal bracelet provided as a free gift with the purchase of a popular brand of trainers and a product recall had to be made after the cause of the child’s death was found.

While most jewellery is free from lead, cheaper jewellery such as that obtained from vending machines or from discount shops, is more likely to contain the dangerous metal and warnings will not necessarily be on the packaging.

Care should therefore be taken to avoid buying metallic accessories from questionable retailers where the quality of the jewellery is uncertain. As a general rule, the cheaper an item is, the more likely it is to contain hazardous materials. Jewellery with visible solder should also be avoided as they are prone to containing high amounts of lead. Children should be encouraged to keep jewellery out of their mouths or if this is not feasible, plastic jewellery should be bought for them instead.
