Personal injury advice sought after woman hospitalised with food poisoning

SeafoodPersonal injury advice is often sought for cases of food poisoning sustained from a restaurant or fast food outlet. E.coli, or Escherichia coli, is a common form of food poisoning and is caused when contaminated food that has not been cooked properly is ingested. While most forms of E.coli are not dangerous to humans and indeed are often beneficial to the body, around 15% of the E.coli bacterium can induce food poisoning.

While for most people, food poisoning just leads to diarrhoea and vomiting for a week or so, for some people it can lead to serious health complications such as renal failure. This unfortunately was the case for one woman who was one of four people that became ill after eating at a fish and chip shop in Wrexham in July 2009.

The 32-year-old mother was admitted to hospital after passing blood and suffering from severe stomach cramps. Soon after being admitted to Wrexham Maelor hospital, the woman suffered two seizures and was put into a deep coma to preserve her strength as she fought the infection.

This required putting the woman on a ventilator to take over her breathing as well as performing regular dialysis to clean her blood after her kidneys started to fail. She also had to be pumped with regular doses of plasma to keep her red blood count up.

Thankfully, despite suffering a couple of setbacks, the woman managed to make a remarkable recovery and was soon reunited with her husband and 12-week old son who had been prevented from seeing his mother due to the risk of infection.

Although the woman has now made a full recovery from her food poisoning, she could easily have died from the effects of E.coli. The fish and chip shop from which she caught it had previously raised concerns with environmental health inspectors after they noted the outlet's "poor hygiene" and "major non-compliance with food legislation." The restaurant had been recommended for annual reviews of its hygiene conditions and was due another one shortly before the E.coli outbreak.

Although it has not been reported if any of the families affected have sought the advice of no win, no fee lawyers, they could make a compensation claim for the personal injuries they experienced due to the poor hygiene of the shop.
