Woman awarded compensation for personal injury claim

A woman who suffered brain damage during an operation to remove her placenta after giving birth has been awarded £600,000 in personal injury compensation.

Sally Gardener, 36, underwent surgery to remove her placenta after giving birth to her third child at Northampton General Hospital in 1999.

The High Court heard that Mrs Gardener suffered an anaphylactic reaction to the drug she was given, which damaged the left-hand side of her brain.

She made a personal injury claim after suffering the traumatic brain injury in a bid to secure financial security to pay for extra help at home.

Mrs Gardener's QC, Richard Barraclough, said she now suffers "major difficulties with her memory and executive functions."

Mr Justice Eady approved the personal injury claim and Mrs Gardener was given a settlement of £600,000 plus £82,000 every year for the next nine years.

After the initial nine years, she will receive 71,500 every year for the rest of her life.
