Passenger injury claim risk from tainted cabin air

Evidence from a new study has revealed that passenger injury claims could be made by travellers after exposure to toxic gasses released by aircrafts.

Scientists believe that organo-phosphates, similar to pesticides, released in an aircraft's engine oils may be contaminating aircraft cabins with toxic chemicals that are making pilots, cabin crew and passengers unwell.

The contaminated fumes are caused by burning engine oil leaking into the ventilation system and the BAE 146 and Boeing 757 aircrafts flown by a number of regional and international airlines have been named as the aircraft types most likely to cause undesirable affects.

Since 2003 there have been reports of more than 100 incidents where fumes have contaminated the air inside British aircraft, as revealed by an analysis of confidential testimony taken from pilots plus official records by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

Records show that during 2006 alone fumes on at least nine flights could have caused personal injury to crew members.

For example, the CAA stated that on a British Airways flight from Edinburgh to Heathrow on 4th September 2005, flight crew were affected by noxious fumes and reported a strong taste of oil fumes in their mouth, which also developed into a burning in the mouth and nose with a slight stinging in the eyes.

UK personal injury solicitors, passenger injury claimAccording to a report from University College London, as many as 197,000 passengers are exposed to contaminated air each year and consultant clinical neuro-psychologist at UCL, Dr Sarah Mackenzie-Ross has commented, "Passengers may suffer mild flu-like symptoms although it may affect others in a more drastic way.

Those who travel by aircraft regularly, such as cabin crew and pilots, are of course more likely to be affected by toxic aircraft fumes, however an unfortunate holidaymaker could suffer the affects of burning engine oil on just a short, domestic flight.

It is likely that passenger injury claims for personal injury compensation could be made, particularly if a number of passengers complain of symptoms associated with fume inhalation.
