Bus accidents that make the headlines
It is not often that we hear of bus accidents occurring in the UK. In fact, they are quite a rare occurrence, which is what made the shock of the National Express coach crash that occurred during January 2007 all the more prominent.
Tragedy struck in the UK when two passengers were killed and ten were left with serious passenger injuries after a National Express coach crashed close to Heathrow Airport on 3rd January 2007. The coach was travelling from London bound for Aberdeen when the bus accident occurred and it was thought that of the 65 passengers likely to be returning from their holidays, at least three were children.
No other vehicles are thought to have been involved in the crash and the driver of the coach was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Following the crash, National Express withdrew all 12 of its double-decker coaches immediately so that they could undergo thorough inspection.
Sadly, we are used to hearing of tragic bus accidents that have occurred in developing countries. The reasons for these road accidents are usually related to poor road conditions, poorly maintained vehicles, badly lit roads and extreme weather conditions. However, of late unsafe driving practices also seem to be at the core of many bus accidents abroad.
The 6th January 2007 saw at least 40 people die when a bus veered off the road and burst into flames after it tried to overtake another vehicle in Bangladesh. The fire was a result of the vehicle's fuel cylinder, which contained compressed natural gas, exploding. The bus was jam-packed but only seven survivors have so far been reported.
Twenty one people were killed and a further 30 sustained passenger injuries when the driver of a bus in Uganda lost control of the vehicle as he sped up to prevent another bus from passing on 22nd January 2007.
