Turn that racket down! Car accidents and no win, no fee claims
If you want to avoid a car accident and a resultant no win, no fee claim for personal injury compensation, it might be best to crank down the volume on your car stereo.
That's because research has found that drivers with a penchant for loud music are much more liable to have a car crash than other road users. In fact, they're more than twice as likely to be involved in a smash as someone who keeps their music at a normal level; the same rate of risk as people who insist on driving whilst using their mobile phone.
Some might find this astounding, especially as the issue of using a mobile behind the wheel has received such enormous press since it was made a criminal offence in February 2007. In contrast, when asked, none of the no win, no win fee claim experts in the YouClaim office could recall any sort of road safety campaign concerned with loud music.
There's no doubt that local councils and resident associations have addressed the issue many times, though more from an irritation point of view instead of for road safety reasons.
Ben Bradshaw, the Labour MP for Exeter and also the Environment Minister, said, "How many people, I wonder, have been distracted by the sudden Boom! Boom! Boom!' coming from one of those cars, wondering what on earth was happening as the ground beneath them shook or the walls and windows of their home vibrated to the heavy thud of some violent bass beat?"
Other politicians have also commented on the issue and some are now starting to recognise that excessively loud music can actually lead to road accidents and no win, no fee claims.
One such minister is Cannock Chase MP Dr Tony Wright who said, "Research carried out by the RAC Foundation found that drivers who were listening to loud music with a fast beat were twice as likely to go through a red light, and that they have twice as many accidents. Cocooned in their sound bubble, they are oblivious to other road users and to their general environment."
In addition to finding that decibel-loving motorists are twice as likely to be involved in car accidents, the RAC research that Dr Wright refers to discovered that an average car stereo can produce 110dB of volume. Studies by acoustic experts have concluded that anybody exposed to noise levels in excess of 85dB for more than eight hours a day is likely to suffer extensive hearing damage.
The RAC Foundation's Edmund King has also commented on the issue and warned drivers to think twice before cranking up the volume.
He said, "Everybody deserves to enjoy peace and quiet in their own homes, yet a minority of motorists have become mobile menaces, imposing their music on unwilling neighbours. We would ask motorists to be responsible when driving and not put lives at risk for the sake of blasting out the latest tunes."
