A couple in the US planted a human finger in a bowl of chilli in a ploy to make false compensation claim against a fast food chain in March 2005.
39 year old Anna Ayala claimed that she had bitten into the finger which she found in her food at Wendy’s restaurant, California and her husband Jaime Placencia, 43, went along with it. But, forensic tests revealed this to be untrue. It was later found that the finger was in fact purchased for $100 from a construction worker who suffered a personal injury in a work accident, in an effort to make their fraudulent compensation claim look more convincing.
The two pleaded guilty to conspiring to file a spurious compensation claim and attempted grand theft in September 2005. Police revealed Ayala to be a serial false claimant, who had received out of court settlements from many other compensation cases.
Before sentencing Ayala to nine years and Placencia to 12 years and 4 months, Superior Court Judge Edward Davila said of the couple that greed had taken over and that they had: 'Lost their moral compasses.'
This false allegation has cost Wendy's fast food chain 1.4m in lost sales and resulted in many employees losing their jobs.
