Yoga can help to ease chronic back pain

New research has suggested that people suffering from a back injury would benefit from yoga over other stretching and strengthening exercises. A team from Seattle ’s Group Health Cooperative Center for Health Studies assessed 101 adults with back pain. The results of the assessment found that at the end of a 12 week period those who took part in 75 minutes of yoga per week were more able to carry out daily activities than the other people being monitored.

Unfortunately most people will suffer with some back pain at some stage in their life. This can be brought on by anything from a work accident to a car accident or a sporting incident. The back is extremely delicate and injuries are sustained easily.

Most treatment offered by doctors is limited in its effectiveness. Pain relievers and muscle relaxants are typical treatments offered to people suffering from a back injury. However exercise including gentle yoga is thought to be a very important aspect of pain relief.

It is advisable to practise yoga under the supervision of a trained instructor as injuries can be sustained as a result of this type of exercise.
