Insurer trains specialist claims handlers to evaluate whiplash injury claims

Allianz Cornhill hopes to get rid of £1 million worth of third party legal costs by improving its claims handling system for whiplash injury claims. The company intends to train claims handlers to evaluate whiplash cases in house rather than using external medico legal experts. This will subsequently save money. Customarily whiplash injury cases cost the company £50 million every year. More than half of that amount arises from legal costs.

The customer will be given access to a medical examination and medical reports. They are however allowed to seek their own private medical assessment and legal advice if they wish and the legal costs will be covered as part of the personal injury claim.

The company will also be attempting to uncover fraud by training handlers to spot tell tale signs of a fraudulent claim. They will assess whether the speed at which the car was travelling was significant enough to cause whiplash injury. The claims will be measured against fraud indicators. A pilot project revealed that some 10% of whiplash injury claims were in fact fraudulent.
